More than two thousand rescuers were sent to battle a raging fire in southwest China's Yunnan Province on Tuesday. But in the second most heavily forested province in China, firefighters were facing an uphill battle.

For three days a massive forest fire has raged in China's southwest Yunnan Province, according to state-run CCTV. The region has suffered from severe drought over the past three years, leaving much of the landscape dry and brittle.

On Tuesday morning, over 2200 military personnel and civilians were dispatched to help combat the fire after initial attempts were unsuccessful. By the afternoon, state-run media said the fire was under control.

Nearly half of Yunnan is covered in forest. The fires are not expected to displace local residents.
