A Chinese audio recording that has gone viral in China is quickly adding to the speculation over what brought down recently fired Chongqing Party leader, Bo Xilai. The unconfirmed recording purports to be from a meeting of high-level officials in the Chinese city of Chongqing.

On the evening of March 16, a 25-minute audio recording appeared on the internet, and swiftly went viral. The supposed origin of the recording is a Chongqing officials' meeting, held immediately after police chief Wang Lijun attempted to defect at a U.S. Consulate. The purported meeting describes what is supposedly the official Party message on the Wang case.

Wang's attempted defection led to a wave of repercussions, most recently resulting in the dramatic March 15 firing of Chongqing Party Chief Bo Xilai, once seen as a rising star and future leader of the Communist Party. In the unverified recording, people purported to be officials and high ranking local Party members discuss the background of the feud between Bo and Wang.

The two were close allies in the massive anti-mafia campaign "Strike the Black", which was part of Bo's rise to national prominence. Yet, according to this recording, Wang's investigations turned up information that would have implicated people close to Bo himself.

["Chinese Official"]:
"On Jan. 28, Wang talked to Bo about important cases involving Bo's family members."

The audio recording goes on to describe that Wang's investigation angered Bo enough to cause the latter to remove him from his position—and that Wang so feared for his life that he decided to defect to the United States on Feb. 6.

Chinese political dissident Wang Beiji, executive director of the NGO New York Democracy University, says that the audio track seems authentic.
