Syrian Kurds seek safety at a refuge camp near the the Iraq-Syria border.

A year after the uprising, amateur video which could not be independently verified by Reuters shows that the protests go on. The United nations says more than 8,000 people have been killed in the uprising.

Refugees offer grim reports of home.

"The current situation in Syria is very difficult. The killing has become more like a game. It is a savage regime."

They call for help

"As you see our conditions are very difficult. We call on the government and organizations to help us and to help these families. Families have no place to settle and have no food and children are ill."

Turkey said Friday it might set up a border "buffer zone" to protect growing numbers of Syrian refugees.

Iraq's Shi'ite-led government is worried the unrest in Syria could spill across the border and upset its own fragile sectarian balance.
