The Tabla Tarang represents a tour de force of transforming the tabla from a percussion instrument into a vehicle of melody. In the tabla tarang, the 'dayan' drums of the tabla are tuned to different pitches in the ascending order to enable the playing of melody. In this rare programme, veteran 'tabla tarang' player H.P.Ramamurthy, who comes in the line of Ganayogi Panchakshara Gavai, makes the tabla tarang ' sing' in classical, folk and devotional styles. Taking advantage of track recording, he has also accompanied himself on the tabla. This is an exhilarating treat of music played with exceptional élan on a rare instrument.
