Nearly three dozen tornados swept through the mid- and southern U.S. with deadly and destructive force.

These were the scenes in the Henryville area of Indiana.

By 0400GMT state officials reported 13 deaths.

Another five deaths have been reported in Kentucky.

Illinois, Missouri and Tennessee were also hit by the wave of tornados.

Homes, schools and at least one jail have been damaged along with vehicles and power lines.

Hailstones the size of baseballs fell in some areas.

The National Weather Service issued storm warnings for more than a dozen states and urged people to take cover.

Thirteen people died in another series of tornados earlier in the week in the same region.
