Mayor fights to rebuild tsunami-hit hometown

The city of Rikuzentakata was virtually wiped from the map on March 11. Thousands of its citizens died and a third of its civil servants were killed. The city's mayor, who lost his wife in the disaster, came to symbolise the tragedy and has led efforts to rebuild his hometown, battling the central government's often slipshod approach to recovery and trying to reunite a community left in tatters by the disaster.
