15 miners are dead in Hunan province after their mine carriages plunged into a tunnel. State-run media Xinhua says the carriages were only meant for transporting coal and not people. Three survived by hastily getting out of the carriages.

China's mines are the deadliest in the world, because of lax safety standards and a rush to feed the economy.

In 2010, more than 2,400 people were killed in coalmine accidents in the Mainland.
