One thing that's very realistic about this show is how the truth gets twisted in the retelling of it. I've seen Julia do this at least 3 times, 2 of which I can cite as examples. What Mariana ACTUALLY said was that their friendship was the most important thing in the world to her and she didn't want to lose Julia. She said the risk (of becoming a couple) to the friendship was too great. I don't think Julia is deliberately misrepresenting what Mariana said. I think she is telling them what she heard. She does the same thing when she tells Mariana about coming out to her mom,— that her mom was accepting but gave her a "lecture" on how difficult life would be dating another woman. Well I was there & have the video and Julia & I have a different understanding of giving someone a *lecture*, which usually means, in this use, being berated and chastised with a long, boring speech. But that was Julia's perspective. I have the advantage of having actual recordings of what was said in these interactions, so I don't have to rely on my faulty memory & my unconscious biases to recall what happened. Anais Nin said, "We do not see things as they are; we see things as WE are." I've seen the truth of that statement from the moment I read it. So that's one of the ways this show stays true to life. People don't have photocopy memories.
