La jeune Toni Braxton est élevée au sein d'une famille composée de cinq filles et un garçon. Elle commence à chanter à l'église. Puis elle fonde avec ses sœurs un groupe : The Braxton's. Toni Braxton se détachera du groupe en étant repérée par les producteurs Kenneth Edmonds (connu sous le pseudonyme de Babyface) et Antonio Reid. Elle signe chez le label LaFace Records. Toni Braxton sort son premier album. Celui-ci remporte trois Grammy Awards et devient neuf fois disque de platine. Sous la direction de Babyface, Toni Braxton prouvera son immense potentiel dans ses deux albums.
En 1998, la chanteuse dut faire face à de graves problèmes financiers. Croulant sous le succès et les récompenses, Toni Braxton aurait pu interrompre sa carrière si elle n'avait pas eu le courage de se battre. Son label l'emporta dans la dérive. Décidée à repartir à zéro, la jeune chanteuse se sépara de Babyface. Elle reprend goût à la vie d'artiste en jouant le rôle de Belle dans la production la Belle et la Bête : la Comédie musicale de Disney mais plus encore, en enregistrant son troisième album The Heat qui contient le hit « He wasn't man enough for me ».
