"It's just devastating that she's gone. She's one of the greatest singers of all time. I've listened to her since I was a little girl. I just can't believe it. My prayers go out to her and her family."

(SOUNDBITE) (English) BEVERLY ST. JAMES SAYING:

"I'm sure this entire country is feeling what I'm feeling right now. And I truly miss this iconic woman because she has played a valuable role in my life."

Her body was removed from the hotel Sunday where she was likely attending a pre-Grammy party hosted by her mentor Clive Davis.

The singer herself was the winner of multiple awards, including for her iconic hit "I will always love you."

But after topping the charts early in her career, Houston suffered from years of drug abuse, rehab and relapses.

In a 2002 interview she admitted using marijuana, cocaine, alcohol and prescription drugs.

Police are still investigating the cause of her death.
