Fabio Capello has quit as England football coach following a meeting with FA top brass. Capello decided to call it a day after the FA stripped John Terry of the England captaincy because of his ongoing court case where Terry stands accused of racially abusing QPR's Anton Ferdinand.

Capello quit after a meeting at Wembley with FA chairman David Bernstein and general secretary Alex Horne. The FA said in a statement that "The Football Association can confirm that Fabio Capello has today resigned as England manager."

On Monday, Capello told Italian television he thought that someone shouldn't be punished before a verdict had been reached and criticized the FA's decision for undermining him. This led some English tabloids to call for Capello's head.

Spurs manager Harry Redknapp, who was cleared of tax evasion earlier the same day, has now been installed as favorite to succeed Capello. Horne has stated previously the FA would like an English coach to take the job.
