Europe's roads buried under snow and ice

Red Cross workers reached several snowbound villages in southern Croatia on Tuesday --- five days after a heavy snowfall cut off access to the remote areas. Local received medicine, food and firewood ---- some of it delivered by Red Cross workers on horseback.

The blanket of snow covering Sarajevo meant heavy lifting for locals and a day off from school for the city's children

The cold sweeping across most of Europe also had Switzerland in its grip ---much of Lake Geneva's promenade and marina were hidden under layers of ice.

Below freezing temperatures in France left a frosty veneer on many of the countries waterways and formed icicles on fountains. The chill prompted authorities to issue severe weather warnings for the eastern part of the country as well as concerns that the electrical system could be overloaded.

The cold snap has killed hundreds of people across Europe -- with officials warning of flooding ahead when temperatures rise and snow melts.
