Myanmar's election commission on Monday gave official approval for opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi to run in the upcoming elections in April.
The move is seen as a key step towards country's democratic reforms.
A crowd gathered outside to greet the pro-democracy leader after the announcement, in the Thanlyin township in Yangon.
While little has changed physically on Myanmar's rutted streets, the government has seen a dramatic transformation in the past six months.
Suu Kyi, a Noble Peace Laureate, is scheduled to go on the campaign trail on February 11.
