A Chinese Communist Party official from Sichuan Province has said that taking bribes is normal—and turning them down could make you seem like a "freak" in Communist political circles. The comments were made by the former vice mayor of the city of Meishan, Yu Zhiping.
Yu's description of bribery as normal and honesty as "freakish" came after his own corruption trial last year, over accusations of taking nearly half a million US dollars in bribes. The down-on-his-luck official also implied that he himself had taken his first bribe simply in order not to make the person offering it to him lose face.
