Gilad Shalit returns home to Israel
After five years and four months, 1941 days in captivity, Israel and the world saw Gilad Shalit for the first time as he was being delivered by Hamas to Egyptian officials at the Rafah crossing. On Tuesday morning, Egyptian television broadcasted the first images showing Shalit as he was escorted by Ahmed Jaba'ari chief of the Hamas military wing Izzadin al-Qassam and responsible for Shalit's abduction, together with armed Hamas officials. Together with Egyptian intelligence officials they hurried Shalit into the terminal on the Egyptian side of the crossing. Shalit wearing a black baseball cap and dressed in civilian clothing appeared pale and thin but walked quickly towards the terminal. At 11a.m, the IDF Spokesman announced that Shalit was in Israeli hands and was being escorted by Israeli military officials along with government aide David Meidan to a nearby army base where he was due to undergo medical tests. He will also speak with his family on his old mobile phone that was found in the tank the day he was abducted in June 2006. At the same time, the 477 Palestinian security prisoners Israel agreed to release in the first stage of the deal were dispersed to Gaza, Judea and Samaria, and different points in Israel. Forty of the prisoners will be transferred from Egypt to Turkey, Syria and Qatar. After undergoing initial medical tests Shalit will be flown to the Tel Nof air base to be reunited with his family.
