Chinese authorities will review Ai Weiwei's case for "back taxes" over the course of two months, according to BBC.
In November 2011, Ai paid a $1.3 million bond so he can make an appeal for his case. Most of the funds came from his supporters.
Ai was detained in April last year. He was released two months later and slapped with tax evasion charges.
Chinese authorities have continued to silence the outspoken critic, who also investigated poor building and school construction after the 2008 earthquake.
