More than a year after his disappearance, Chinese dissident lawyer Gao Zhisheng is now said to be imprisoned in a remote prison in western China. With his older brother now planning to travel to Xinjiang to try and see him, Gao's long-time supporter, AIDS activist Hu Jia, is calling on others to also travel there to show support for the suppressed lawyer.

Chinese AIDS activist Hu Jia wants the public to show support for jailed rights lawyer Gao Zhisheng, by visiting his prison in remote western China. Gao's family and supporters only found out this week that he's being held in the Xinjiang Shaya Prison, after not knowing his whereabouts for more than 18 months.

Hu Jia, who was released from prison last June for alleged subversion, says the Chinese regime is attempting to isolate Gao from the public by sending him to Shaya Prison.

[Hu Jia, Chinese AIDS Activist]:
"That place is so remote, it's virtually cut off from the modern environment we live in. I think this is why the regime didn't place him in Urumqi, [the capital of Xinjiang], but instead sent him to Shaya Prison which is another 500 miles away."

State-controlled media announced in December that Gao is in prison because he apparently violated his parole conditions. The renowned rights advocate had a suspended sentence for alleged subversion and, on several occasions, disappeared into police detentions and was tortured.

Hu Jia wants Gao's supporters to travel to Xinjiang to show the Chinese regime that he will always remain in the public eye.
