A group of panda cubs in one research facility in Sichuan Province are growing up. The 12 cubs recently left their mothers to live together as a group, according to state media reports.

Their first step towards independence attracted a large number of visitors at the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding.

Footage shows the cubs, who are just a few months old, play fighting, rolling around and falling over.

The giant panda is considered an endangered species.

Pandas International says an estimated 1,600 of them are left in the wild.

A total of 21 giant pandas were bred in captivity in China in 2011, bringing the total number in captivity in the country to 333.
