The first Sunday of every month, many things are free in France, but if you select a popular place, go early, as lines will be long. Since this was on New Year's Day and everyone was still comatose, we had an early lunch and drove into Paris from Saint-Denis. We found legal parking for free in Le Marais and traffic was light, but we took a huge gamble. You are better off using public transportation in and around Paris. Just allow yourself travel time, and buy ten-packs of tickets ("carnets") for the bus, métro and tramway, for a big savings.
