Kraft has reported on its environmental impacts as a global food company. The study focuses on the company’s response to climate change, land and water use, and sets targets for improvement in operations by the end of 2015. Goals include an increase in sustainable sourcing of commodities by 25 percent; a reduction in energy and water use by 15 percent in manufacturing plants; and the elimination of 50,000 metric tons of packaging material.

The EPA has recognized five communities with the 2011 National Award for Smart Growth Achievement. The award is for the use of innovative policies and strategies that strengthen economies while providing sustainable housing and transportation choices. Selected from 68 applicants from 27 states, the winners are St. Louis; Albuquerque; El Paso; Howard, South Dakota; and Normal, Illinois.
