In America, the modern-day breadline is known as SNAP. About 45 million receive food stamps, costing US$65 billion a year. This has recently come to the attention of Yum! Brands. The KFC operator wants to be able to accept food stamps at its stores. Yum! is lobbying for access to SNAP cash. It has also paid off anti-hunger advocates to speak on its behalf. SNAP is rife with fraud. Corrupt retailers pay 50 cents then collect a dollar from Uncle Sam. The cash is then used for purposes not intended for SNAP. In this era of belt-tightening, shouldn't Uncle Sam be looking at more efficient ways to feed the hungry?
