In Dubai, a fun event to raise awareness about recycling is making waves. Our local correspondents bring us the story.

The word “recycling” has taken on a whole new meaning for participants in the “Whatever Floats your Boat” event held recently at Dubai Creek.

Plastic bottles, empty canisters and barrels have never been so useful.

[Tom Lood, General Manager of Dubai Festival City]:
“The competition today “whatever floats your boat” is just fantastic is great fun, we are sailing recycled boats across the Creek. Lot of Fun.”

Young and old alike have participated in the competition, increasing awareness and also raising money for the Emirates Environment Group.

[Tom Lood, General Manager of Dubai Festival City]:
“The purpose for this competition is really to raise money and awareness for the World Wildlife Fund, so far today we have raised over a hundred thousand dirham, which will go to save the turtles around the gulf of UAE.”

All participants were required to build a boat entirely from recycled materials.

The teams raced the boats in 5 groups of 4 across the marina.

Prizes were given to the first boat to cross the line, the most creative designer, and also to the team with the most supporters.

100% of the registration fees will be donated to the Emirates Wildlife Society in association with World Wildlife Fund.

The event was especially designed to encourage people in Dubai to take the initiative and recycle more.

[Tom Lood, General Manager of Dubai Festival City]:
“The amount of people that have come down to festival marina just down by Dubai Festival City has blown us away, its been fantastic, it is over a thousand people here today.”
