Is Jesus Christ God or just a prophet? Did He ever claim to be God? What do the ancient texts tell us? Sheikh al-Islam Taqi ad-Din Ahmad ibn Taymiyyah (1263-1328) was a famous Muslim scholar born in Harran, located in what is now Turkey, close to the Syrian border. As a member of the school founded by Ibn Hanbal, he sought the return of Islam to its sources, the Qur'an and the Sunnah. Because he lived during the time of the Crusaders, He saw a significant of the Christian population becoming Muslim or forming certain sects and certain people who were already Muslims were forming certain sects. As one says, you are a product of your environment. A very large percentage of Syrians were Christian and joining Islam and they were bad influences. Ibn Taymiyah attacked the idea of having saints, He also believed Shia Islam to be a heresy because they hold similar beliefs ( the idea of 12 Imams intercede for you ), As for Druze and Alawites Ibn Taymiyah call for their persecution since they are worse polytheist than Christians are. He has written a book titled " al-Jawab as Sahih li man Baddala Din al-Masih " (Literally, "The Correct Response to those who have Altered the Deen (Religion) of the Messiah"; A Muslim theologian's response to Christianity, in response to the idea of having Saints and Trinity Ibn Taymiyyah strongly opposed borrowing from Christianity or other non-Muslim religions. In his text On the Necessity of the Straight Path (kitab iqtida al-sirat al-mustaqim) he preached that the beginning of Muslim life was the point at which `a perfect dissimilarity with the non-Muslims has been achieved.` To this end he opposed the celebration of the Prophet Muhammad's birthday or the construction of mosques around the tombs of Sufi "saints" saying: `Many of them [the Muslims] do not even know of the Christian origins of these practices. Accursed be Christianity and its adherents! He died young but he left a lot of books. Many of Ibn Taymiyyah students became big time scholars like Ibn al-Qayim and al-Thahabi. Ibn Taymiyah efforts are until today very useful, his guideline are until today used by the Muslims who want to follow Islam like it was at the days of the companions, without any additions and without any deletions. ---------------------------- Short info about the speaker: Dr Saleh As-Saleh (rahimahullaah) was from the foremost students of Shaykh Ibnul-Uthaymeen (rahimahullaah).
