STORY: Hundreds of children brought their baby Jesus figurines to St. Peter's Square on Sunday for the traditional blessing of the infant by Pope Benedict during Angelus.
The children could be seen waving the figurines, which ranged from miniature to larger sizes, in the air as they chanted and cheered.
Pope Benedict, addressing the pilgrims from the window of his private residences overlooking the square, called on the children to think of him over the festive period. "Today's first greeting is reserved for the children of Rome, who have come...thank you! Dear children, when you pray in front of your nativity scenes, also remember me, as I remember you. Thank you! Merry Christmas!" he said.
Ahead of Angelus the Pope paid a visit to the nearby Roman parish of Santa Maria delle Grazie.
Large numbers of children were also gathered outside the church and were greeted by Benedict ahead of the pastoral visit.
