The bucolic farm life is no more. The family farm, an idyllic setting where cows graze freely in the pasture and hens wander round the yard - this is no longer the reality for the majority of animals raised for their meat. Especially in North America, large-scale factory farms and slaughterhouses using dubious techniques have replaced the sprawling green fields and local butcher shops. Cruel and inhumane treatment rule the day, as this video shows. Contained herein are clips from real slaughterhouses and factories, where workers routinely abuse and neglect their charges. It's a difficult video to watch; it's been years since I first saw it, and even after multiple viewings, I still cry by the end of it. As Isaac Asimov so elegantly put it: "To insult someone we call him 'bestial'. For deliberate cruelty and nature, 'human' might be the greater insult."
