Protests over Execution of Filipino Man in China

On Thursday, Chinese authorities executed a Filipino migrant worker, despite repeated pleas for clemency by the Philippine government. Angry protestors marched on the streets of Manila.
The 35-year-old man was arrested at the Guilin International Airport in 2008 for smuggling heroin 3.3 pounds of heroin. He was allowed a brief visit with his two siblings and two cousins, before his execution.
Protestors blame their own government for not doing more.
[Garry Martinez, Chairman, Migrante International]:
"We are saddened because our appeal to China to lengthen one person's life went unanswered. But we are angrier at the Philippine government, who should be the one protecting and defending its citizens. But for the past year, we were left disappointed and we did not witness President Aquino answer our calls for protection."
The Philippine government offered its condolences to the family, but said they respect China's decision to go ahead with the execution. China is the world's most frequent user of the death penalty.
