A week before the Nobel Prize Ceremony, the Nobel Foundation and the City of Stockholm announce plans to build Nobel Prize Center. The center will act as a meeting place for Nobel Laureates, researchers, students and the general public.
On Friday, at the Nobel Museum in Stockholm, the president of the Nobel Foundation and the Mayor of Stockholm announced plans to create a "Nobel Prize Center".
The over 215,000 sq. ft. center will be built in the heart of Stockholm, close to the Swedish National Museum.
The intention is to put Stockholm on the map as a world-leading knowledge region.
[Lars Heikensten, Chairman, Nobel Foundation]:
”This is not just a museum, it´s something more. We look at it as a meeting place, a contemporary meeting place. We want to have seminars, discussion and debate about the subjects that are related to the Nobel prize. These are scientific issues, but it also has to do with literature, human values, peace. Nobel was a unique person and his prize covers a lot of different areas.”
The building will host an enlarged Nobel Museum and the activities of the Nobel Foundation and the Nobel Media.
[Sten Nordin, Mayor of Stockholm]:
”This large building will function as a museum and a venue for international seminars and symposiums, and should be completed within seven years.”
There are plans to launch an international architectural competition in the autumn of 2012 and the cost of the project is estimated at about $145 million US dollars, but how it will be funded is not decided yet.
