The US ambassador to China, Gary Locke, was in Jinan on Tuesday to promote US exports to China. The trip was the first of several the ambassador will make to promote US trade with China.

The United States' new ambassador to China, Gary Locke, visited Jinan City in Shandong Province Tuesday. He's attempting to balance the huge trade imbalance between the two nations by promoting US exports.

A glitzy hotel hosted the ambassador and other US companies for a trade fair show where they sought to win new business in the Mainland. The companies accompanying Locke were specialty chemicals or equipment makers, with products designed to upgrade China's inefficient and polluting energy sector.

[Gary Locke, US Ambassador to China]:
"Everyone that has exported to China reports that what may have started off small builds over time, such that we've seen phenomenal increases in U.S. exports from the United States to China. In fact exports were up some 32 percent last year alone."

The US has been trying to claw out markets in China, trying to close the massive trade gap while filling the void left by a slump in demand from the US and Europe.

In 2010, American exports to China were at $91.9 billion, according to the US Department of Commerce. However, it is still far away from the $365 billion that China exports to the US. Locke's Tuesday event was the first of five trade missions he's set to lead, each promoting a different, specific industry.
