A fire in downtown Hong Kong killed at least nine people and injured 30 early Wednesday morning.
The blaze spread through Mongkok -- the world's most densely populated area -- ripping through street stalls before engulfing old multi-story tenement buildings nearby.
The Fire Services Department battled the blaze for over five hours before bringing it under control.
Firefighters then searched for residents and bodies at the scene.
Hong Kong's Secretary for Security says at least 70 families have registered for assistance.
[Lee Siu-kwong, Hong Kong's Secretary for Security]:
"I'm sorry to learn about so many casualties. My condolences to the victims and their families."
Police investigating the cause of the blaze say arson has not been ruled out.
