Home Décor Tips: Fabric Pattern Options for Your Home - as part of the expert series by GeoBeats. Hi, my name is Jane Mogel, I am with Jane Mogel Interior Design in New York City and today we are going to talk about choosing fabric patterns in your decorating projects. On this table I have a collection of fabrics I had like to show you. The first is a blue paisley. This would be a very good fabric to use for drapery or lightweight upholstery, for chairs that are not being used very much, for pillows. Another example of a paisley is this neutral paisley, same applications, but you can see the fabric looks totally different in neutral colors than it did in the blue. I have a collection of stripes here. Here is a very dressy red, green and gold stripe. This is a silk, I would not recommend using this for upholstery, it is a delicate fabric, it is also a very expensive fabric so I would use it sparingly. Silk makes beautiful drapery. Be careful of the sun because sun can damage silk fabrics. Something to consider when you use a fabric like that. Here is a casual stripe, this would be lovely in a child's room. You do not have to worry about the sun with this, this is 100% cotton, so good for drapery or lightweight upholstery. Here is a wide stripe. You can see it is totally different than the small stripe but also really nice. And here is another casual linen stripe, going back to the neutrals. So these two, the neutral paisley and the stripe, would be fantastic together. The next collection of fabrics are geometrics. This first geometric is a cut velvet fabric, it is actually silk and velvet, this is a very expensive fabric, I would use it sparingly. But it is also a very durable fabric, and a lot of fabrics have the durability rating. This one is 30,000 double rubs, they actually have people in the companies who are checking that constantly. So this is a wonderful fabric, this will wear like steel. This is actually a sunbrella fabric so you could use this fabric outside. Sunbrella's come a long way in the technology, the fabrics are a lot softer than they used to be. So if you had a deck or a porch or a house with a back yard and cushions, this would be a great fabric for that. Then I have two solid fabrics. Here is a solid velvet. Velvet can show the wear markings, so if you are using it for upholstery you might see when somebody sat on the sofa and may not be happy with that. Here is a solid linen, very casual fabric, not very durable, better for drapery than upholstery.
