Highways were closed and flights cancelled as heavy fog spread in northern China. More than 10,000 passengers were stranded at airports across the region.

Dense fog blanketed China on Sunday, disrupting traffic as it spread through northern, central and eastern provinces.

At Urumqi Airport in Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous region, more than 10,000 passengers were stranded after flights were delayed or cancelled.

It was a similar story at the airport in Shandong, with 18 flights delayed. Cargo vessels were stranded at the dock due to the fog.

In Liaoning Province, a major airport and more than 10 highways were closed. Around 100 long distance buses were halted as authorities waited for the fog to lift.
