And heavy snow in the Xinjiang region led to a 16-car pile up on Tuesday. More than 200 people were stranded on a highway, with some having to spend the night in their cars.

Bad weather in northwest China forces traffic to a standstill on Tuesday, as highways close due to snow.

The blizzard has stranded some 200 passengers along a highway section in China's Xinjiang region.

Highway rescue workers were dispatched on Monday to clear the road and pull stranded vehicles out of the snow piles.

A long line of vehicles line the highway, forcing some to spend the night in their car.

    [Sha Chaobo, Stranded Driver]:
"I have been here since 10 o'clock last night. I had nowhere to sleep at night and slept in the car. I had a little bit of the cookies I bought as a meal."

According to state-run media, flights and ferry services have also been cancelled on Tuesday due to heavy snow.
