Art Showcase: Avro Arrow Mailbox

Art Showcase: Avro Arrow Mailbox - as part of the expert series by GeoBeats. This is my Avro Arrow mailbox. Originally I wanted to make the fusilage big enough that you could put mail in the fusilage. But when I did the math, it was going to be 9 feet long with a 6 foot wingspan. So I figured, no, this is not going to work. Now the full size plane is 89 feet long, 53 foot wing span so I thought it was a little bit big to build full size. I made the plane 27 inches long. It is got a 16 inch wingspan. I constructed it out of quarter inch steel plate. And the fusilage is actually inch and a half by three inch channel iron. The engines on the back I made out of pipe and I welded in carriage bolts. And then I have got the nose on the front. It is actually screwed in, the nose of it. So I mounted it on a piece of culvert, it represents a Nissen hut. And the base is made from a piece of transformer door, and it is all welded to a steel post. So the whole thing weighs about 250 pounds. And for the flag I put a windsock, and then I inserted a mailbox inside. So this was a nice little project for the springtime.
