Wallace was a pseudonym of Ed Kirkeby (1891-1978), who was a band leader, vocalist, manager, and salesman, best remembered as the manager of Fats Waller. He was one of the first recording managers at Columbia Records to record jazz and organized the California Ramblers to record it. Over the years he also managed the Pickens Sisters. As Fats Waller’s manager he also acted as his archivist building a collection which is held today by the Institute of Jazz Studies. After Waller’s death in 1943 Kirkeby remained active managing many other groups and musicians. This wonderful recording was made in 1931. Rust omitted this recording in his Dance Band Discography. The lead vocal in the uncredited trio unmistakably is by Elmer Feldkamp; one of the other members might be Ed Kirkeby himself. Any additional info is warmly welcomed.

You couldn't have put it better, Michael; this performance is so elegantly balanced, greatly orchestrated and then there's of course the delicate vocal... We'll never know about Rust indeed, since he's gone forever. Still he's leaving us a few monumental encyclopaedias we'll probably be grateful forever too - or at least as long as peaple will be listening to this superb music. I trust it will go a very long way though, because as Keats wrote: "A thing of beauty is a joy forever". And just like you, I' m convinced this is of sheer beauty :-)

Jack, Patrick - I think I said something like "This is just lovely; beautifully paced and quite my favourite of all the Kirkeby/Wallace/Lloyd/Loyd recordings (although "I've Got My Eye On You" runs it a close second). Unfortunately it's too late to ask Brian Rust why he omitted it from his discography since he sadly died in his nursing home here in England in January this year.
I can always be tempted by those happy photos of Fats Waller and Ed together. Michael."
