Dutch funeral homes are increasingly being accused of overcharging customers and unclear billing. There have been so many reports of overbilling that the Dutch financial watchdog, the AFM, has launched an investigation. In its preliminary findings, the AFM says the industry is indeed overcharging families. The Willemse Family for instance was quoted 6000 euros for a funeral, but when they received the bill, it was over 9000 euros. It included a number of unexpected costs: for example 1500 euros extra because the deceased was overweight. And 500 euros for pallbearers even though the family had expressly said it didn't want them.
