Teaching Kids to Appreciate Thanksgiving - as part of the expert series by GeoBeats. Thanksgiving is a very important American holiday and it is also one where we should really spend the time to talk to our children about the importance of Thanksgiving and what it really means. Now, the first Thanksgiving was actually celebrated in 1621 by the Pilgrims and the Native Americans. And they were celebrating the first harvest. Now, it was not until 200 years later that President Abraham Lincoln declared Thanksgiving as a national holiday. The reason he did this is it was during the Civil War, and Americans needed something to unify them. Now, today Thanksgiving is also a time when we want to celebrate and be thankful for the food and for the harvest that we have. But it is also even more meaningful. It is a day that we take to show our thanks for not just the food but also for the roof over our head, for the clothes that we have, for the toys that we play with, and also for our friends and our family. So if you take some time to tell your children a little bit about the history and about what it really means, they can participate more with the family and have a greater understanding of Thanksgiving. It might also be a time that you can encourage your children to help other people in need. So, to donate food or clothing or maybe some of their gently used toys, to people that might not have these things. So I hope that these few tips on looking at Thanksgiving and how we can celebrate it and be thankful for all that we have.
