17 people have been jailed in northwest China's city of Lanzhou. The individuals were arrested while protesting housing demolitions carried out by city authorities.
The charges they were convicted of include 'beating and throwing bricks at police officers' who were tearing apart their makeshift housing. Sentences range from three to six months in prison.
The Communist Party's official mouthpiece Xinhua called the apparent violent confrontation "a scenario which has become all too familiar in China in recent years." Some political experts estimate there are thousands of similar confrontations each year.
