Her many books include Psychoanalysis: The Impossible Profession, The Journalist and the Murderer, Reading Chekhov: A Critical Journey, and Two Lives: Gertrude and Alice. Her most recent, Iphigenia in Forest Hills: Anatomy of a Murder Trial, grew out of a New Yorker piece published last year.
