Now for an update on the fatal mine accident in China's Henan Province we covered last week. The last trapped miner was successfully rescued, bringing rescue operations to a close.
Saturday marked the end of a three-day mining rescue operation, with the last trapped survivor pulled out on a stretcher. In total, out of the 75 miners initially trapped, eight miners died from the Thursday cave-in and the rest were rescued.
The collapse was triggered by a rock-burst reported shortly after a 2.9 magnitude earthquake had crossed that area of Henan Province. Over 200 workers dug a tunnel to reach the trapped miners.
The mine is in Sanmenxia City, Henan Province. It belongs to the Henan Yima Coal Mine Group, a large state-owned mining firm.
The mining industry in China is the deadliest in the world. In 2010 a total of 2,433 workers died from mining accidents.
