A bridge collapses in rural central China on Saturday after an overloaded truck tried to cross. The bridge was designed to support up to five tons, but the truck, loaded with sand, weighed 15 tons.
An aging bridge in rural central China collapsed on Saturday, taking four vehicles with it into a river.
Two people suffered minor injuries in the accident that took place in central Henan Province's Xiangcheng City, state television reported.
A local official said an overloaded truck drove on the 34-year-old bridge despite a traffic ban. Officials say the bridge had been built to support up to five tons, but the truck, loaded with sand, weighed 15 tons.
[Zhang Ying, Deputy Director, Bureau of Water Resources]:
"The bridge had not been repaired for a long time and was listed as dangerous, and the truck was overloaded. Both contributed to the accident. None of the five people involved in the accident were killed."
Although age and a lack of maintenance have propelled local authorities to slap "danger" labels on some bridges, drivers still risk driving across them to save time and money.
Although workers managed to hoist the vehicles out of the river, most of the bridge sank into the depths.
