On Wednesday a 65-year-old grandmother, Zhang Weiming, was sentenced to three and half years in jail for, "organizing a crowd to create a disturbance" in Shanghai.
The so-called "disturbance" happened on Tuesday when Mrs. Zhang and about 300 elderly supporters protested outside a local Shanghai court. About 200 policemen were sent in to disperse the crowd.
For eight years, Mrs. Zhang has been an ardent supporter of the nearly 100-thousand Shanghainese who were sent to the distant deserts of Xinjiang in the 1960s. Mao Zedong sent them there to increase the agricultural workforce.
Thousands were left without an education or a means to support themselves when they returned to their homes, in cities that had moved on and had left them behind.
