A solar-powered computer kiosk is breaking new ground by making the Internet available for first time, to school children in Uganda. Thanks to UNICEF, the digital world has another drum beat to march to.
It's hard to imagine surfing the Internet here in of rural Uganda..but now these kids are tapping into the world wide web, thanks to oil drum computers... powered by the sun.
Sharad Sapra of Unicef says Internet access here has been long overdue.

"The innovative technologies like these actually help create a digital bridge between those who have access to Internet and those who don't, in a low cost sturdy fashion."
The first of its kind, the solar operated computer is housed within a recycled oil drum, for use in remote places where access to power is limited, according to project coordinator,
Seth Hurr.

"The objective is to put them in places that are as rural as possible, areas where people don't have access to really any information, a lot of these villages and towns don't have full time teachers so they have schools but students don't really have access to anything in the way of information."
Analysts say only about 10 percent of Uganda's population uses the Internet but using available resources, a new generation is bridging the gap.
