Dr. Steven Sorenson plans to tap the geothermal energy of the Earth's interior by means of a thermonuclear device detonated deep within the Earth. Despite dire warnings by fellow scientist Ted Rampian, Dr Sorenson proceeds with the experiment after secretly learning that he is terminally ill. This experiment causes a crack to form and grow within the earth's crust, which threatens to split the earth in two if it is not stopped in time.

One of the best end-of-the-world dramas of the 60s, with intensely explosive sequences dominating the silly mad-scientist-drills-a-hole-in-Mother-Earth plot. Aging Dana Andrews competes with beefy Kieron Moore to save the world and bag Janette Scott; wonder who she'll pick? The climactic effects are the best of their kind for the time, and the whole thing has an adventurous feel, as if the filmmakers knew it would presage "Earthquake" and "The Towering Inferno" in the 70s. Lots of fun; thanks for sharing!
