In 1945, there is a small farmhouse hidden inside Italy that remains a strong base of operations for the Nazis. Sgt. Tyne (Dana Andrews) is charged with leading his platoon to take over this location. This will give the Allies an excellent base of operation as they continue to push their stranglehold on the Germans. The Nazis are taken by surprise and put up a strong fight. During the course of action the group of soldiers have time to reflect on all that is going on around them. Rivera (Richard Conte) and Friedman (George Tyne) talk about the futility of war and if it does make a difference. McWilliams (Sterling Holloway) and Carraway (Huntz Hall) get into a discussion about the complexity of the human body. During this time, the squad moves closer and closer to its goal. But how will this war change them all?
