Exotic Pets - Red-Eyed Crocodile Skink

Exotic Pets - Red-Eyed Crocodile Skink - as part of the expert series by GeoBeats. This is a Red Eyed Crocodile Skink. They are known by several other different names, but that is the easiest one for us to go by here. Crocodile Skinks get between 4 and 8 inches long, they come from New Guinea. And they live in a fairly dark swampy area. Uh, they are semi-aquatic. They like it when it is real wet and mushy. They live under logs and flat rocks during the day, and hunt insects. They are very unusual in the fact that they have got this bright red, orangeish red ring around their eye. And when they are born, they do not have this ring. It gradually appears as they mature. Uh, they are very easy to set up in captivity. A 10 gallon aquarium would house 1 or 2. A large water bowl with dirt on the bottom of the cage, and a hiding place. Maybe some cork bark tied under. They also sometimes run away. To us, these are, to them, we are just large predators. So they just want to make sure that we are not going to try to eat them. They have got this very spiky back for protection. And this little patch on the belly which indicates that this is a male. The females do not have that patch. Very very neat, very hard scaled animal. And once they are established in captivity, they actually do very very well. To breed these animals. They only lay 1 egg at at time, so they are not very prolific in captivity. But there are several people now that are breeding these commercially, and they are very very neat. So we should be able to see more and more of these for sale as time goes by. I like these a lot, they are very cool.
