Chinese Apple fans in Shanghai pay tribute to the company's icon, Steve Jobs, on Thursday. It comes after the news of his death at the age of 56 on Wednesday.

Jobs died after a years-long battle with pancreatic cancer.

The co-founder of Apple Inc was surrounded by his wife and immediate family when he died in California.

His death was announced by Apple and sparked an immediate outpour of sympathy. Condolences were given from world leaders, competitors and other businessmen including Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates.

At mainland China's biggest Apple Store, Shanghai resident Jin Yi says he came to quietly mourn the death of his idol.

[Jin Yi, Mourning Steve Jobs]:
"I came here to see how they will operate on the first day that they had lost Steve Jobs. I also came here to mourn his death in my own way."

The icon who gave the world the iPod, iPhone and iPad, stepped down as chief executive of Apple in August. He handed the reins to his long-time lieutenant, Tim Cook.

Apple paid homage by changing its website to a photograph with "Steve Jobs: 1955-2011." The flags outside the company's headquarters fly at half mast.

Jobs died just one day after Apple unveiled its latest iPhone, the gadget that catapulted the company to be one of the world's top electronics companies.
