Swedish poet Tomas Transtromer has been nominated for the Nobel prize for literature every year since 1993.
This is his year.
(SOUNDBITE) (English) PERMANENT SECRETARY OF THE SWEDISH ACADEMY PETER ENGLUND, SAYING:
"And in English: The Nobel prize in literature for 2011 is awarded to the Swedish poet Tomas Transtromer because through his condensed, translucent images he gives us fresh access to reality."
Twenty years ago Transtromer suffered a stroke that severely limited his speech and movement, but not the power of his writing.
As well as being popular in Sweden, his collections have been translated into more than 50 languages.
The Swedish Academy says his works are characterised by economy, concreteness and poignant metaphors.
Transtromer is the first Swede to take home the one and a half million dollar prize since 1974.
