NEW YORK - Joe Zee from Elle Magazine once remarked that Derek Lam is the epitome of classic American sportswear. In the case of his Spring/Summer 2012 collection for New York Fashion Wek, Lam was just that--with a throwback to the colorful California look, of course. He mentions that his collection this year is based on Richard Neutra's Kaufmann House in Palm Springs, but with an air of luxury, of course. This meant a wide mixture of sportswear-esque textures including linen for summer dressed up with leather jackets and blazers. While the two fabrics don't ideally go together, Lam somehow through his mass mixture of materials, made it work. One shouldn't be ignorant, however, on the mass prints in this collection, as well. Tailored pieces with resort-era patterns, perfect for summer vacations in hot beachy locales, made for perfect additions to his finely pressed program.
