The suicide bomber who drove an explosives-laden vehicle into the home of a senior police officer in Karachi failed to kill his intended target.
At least eight people, some of them policemen guarding the house of Senior Superintendent Chaudhry Mohammad Aslam, were killed.
Others including members of Aslam's family were trapped beneath the wreckage of the house which was largely destroyed.
Aslam says he's had death threats from militant groups including the Pakistani Taliban which is linked to al Qaeda.
Karachi is Pakistan's biggest city and also its most unstable.
As well as militancy it is plagued by ethnic and political violence which has reached its worst level in 15 years.
