Ternopilski kashtany (Chestnuts of Ternopil) - Ukrainian song by Volodymyr Verminsky. Song about the city of Ternopil (Тернопіль / Tarnopol ) in west Ukraine. Its has 217.300 inhabitants and is the center of Ternopil region with population more than 1 million and 107.924. It belonged to Austrian empire (1772-1918) and to Poland (til 1939), being in the historic area of Galicia (Halychyna). Nowadays its a big center of Ukrainian patriotism and Ukrainian language. Old historic postcards of Ternopil featured. There was significant Jewish and Polish population in the city. Jews (Polish speaking) made 44 % of the population in 1931. The rest were Poles and Ukrainians. In 1945-1946 Soviet authorities deported most of Poles to Poland (mainly to new western Polish territories around Wroclaw). Today the city is nearly exclusively Ukrainian.
